The brown of the moth can be compared to the burnt umber hue of the bricks. The edge of the moth’s wings are lighter and a smaller portion of his body, just like how the grout between the bricks is lighter and smaller in proportion.

There is also an aspect of symbolism in this photo^^

Typography is an important element when designing anything with text. I made this last semester for a non-profit I had been working will called the Feminist Majority Foundation. My task was to advertise an event they had coming up, and I needed to consider the elements of design to do so. I chose a clear text and a light text color to contrast with the busy and colorful background. I incorporated the original blue of the poster the woman is holding so that the entire image is tied together, and helps the white text stand out even more! I used a few different fonts in different text bubbles to emphasize certain words to grab the audience’s attention and put focus on the main message of the advertisement.

This photo has multiple elements of design that stand out in it. I took this while in Germany during the summer of last year. This is an old, gothic-style cathedral in one of the towns we visited. In terms of balance, the cathedrals symmetry, noted by identical pillars flanking the entrance, creates a strong sense of equilibrium. The door and the stained glass windows being centered anchor the entire composition as well.

Another notable element of design seen here is proportion. The towers on the left and right of the structure emphasize the verticality of it, which was actually traditional of Gothic architecture. The people near the entrance in this photo also help provide a sense of scale, which highlights how large the cathedral actually is.

Dominance is also relevant here as the cathedral itself dominates the scene, both in size and visual impact with how detailed it is. Especially the arched and intricate carvings and designs, it is meant to draw the eyes upward, exemplifying how grand it is meant to be.

This photo is from my eagle gathering as a freshman. In it, we can recognize symbols and read into the function/message of the event and photo itself. Eagle gathering is a tradition at UMW in which upperclassmen will light the candles of new freshmen in the first week as a way of welcoming them to Mary Washington. This is symbolically “lighting their flame/providing warmth.” It is essentially meant to make the freshmen feel like they are officially welcomed into the community, and taken care of by those already here. Another way to examine this candle light tradition is in the way that fire represents passion, new students at Mary Washington will get their passions sparked by connecting with upperclassmen and the greater campus community.

Hope you enjoyed this walk through of design elements represented in photos ive taken!

In this post, ill be reviewing different elemts of design and examining diffrent photos from my personal camera roll that I think represent some of these aspects best.
